Installing Masonry Joist Hangers

Joist hangers can be found in a variety of sizes and types for both timber to timber and timber to masonry applications.

Of course, it can be difficult deciding which joist hanger you need but if it’s a specific size you’re looking for then we might be able to help you. In this short guide, we’ll be guiding you through the process of installing a masonry joist hanger and specifically our FHM single piece masonry joist hanger.

Installation of the FHM

When beginning the process of installing the FHM ensure the back plate of the hanger is lying flat against the vertical masonry support. Additionally, the masonry flange should have a minimum of 3 courses (675mm masonry) above. At this point, it’s imperative that both the supporting and above masonry have been allowed to mature before you apply any load to it.

Moving onto the joist, it must be a square cut that will sit tightly to the back of the hanger with a maximum 6mm gap allowed. Once in place, be sure to nail the side flanges with 30 x 3.75 galvanised square twist nailsor an equivalent. Now with regards to the masonry flange, this should always be securely fixed or adequately embedded and should never be placed in dry slots.

A final note for installing these hangers, always use the appropriate fixings in particular use compatible corrosion resistant fixings for example don’t use galvanised fixings with stainless steel products or vice versa.

Following the installation guide, here is a brief lowdown on the FHM itself. Our hanger has a straight top flange, no welds and can easily be transformed into a hook over joist hanger using the unique FHM Lock Plates, no special tools or rivets are required. Just insert Lock Plate at 90°, rotate and tap into place.
